Mat Your Photos to Make Them Stand Out!
"Manatee Viewing Center" by Jodi Benson - Pattern #1094
Matting your photos adds depth to your page and helps them stand out on your background, your 12x12 Grid Paper.
You can see Jodi's photos have colors very similar to her 12x12 Make Time Grid Paper from the All Season Collection. Her beautiful photos would have blended
into the background without the brown and blue
cardstock mats. It's a simple technique beginners can use to make their photos 'pop' off the page.
The layers of photos, cardstock, and a 12x12 Grid Paper background give your layout depth and interest. Matting gives your page a visual illusion of three
dimensionality. Layering your photos is a simple and easy way to make your page not feel flat and boring. In the Basic Die Bundle, you have dies that cover the grid that will make mats, and you have dies to layer on those mats.
With your Basic Die Bundle, you have all the
dies you need to mat your photos to add depth and make them stand out!

Try Different Ways to Mat Your Photos
"Breakfast in Richmond" by Jodi Benson - Pattern #1099
You might be surprised just how many fun and creative matting techniques you can try using just the Basic Die Bundle. It’s not only simple—it’s super versatile!
One idea we love: Try mixing it up by matting some photos and leaving others un-matted. In the layout above, Jodi did this by adding mats to every other photo on the top and bottom rows. It adds a playful rhythm to the page. She also used a clever trick—placing a bit of paper behind each side of her photo mats to make it look like a strip running across the page. So
smart!
You can also experiment with:
Colorful cardstock or patterned paper mats
Different
mat sizes for contrast
Doubling up on mats for extra dimension
Adding photo corners, distressing edges, or tucking in embellishments
Placing more than one small photo on a single mat
And the best part? All of this was done using the dies from the Basic Die Bundle—your go-to tools for cropping photos, creating mats, and building layers that look polished and professional.
So go ahead and play a little—you’ll be
amazed at what you can create with the basics!

Combining Colors for Mats on Your Page
"Florida Beach Vacation" by Jodi Benson - Pattern #964
There are so many color combination ideasfor beautiful layouts. We wanted to share a few with you in this email.
In the first layout featured above, Jodi used soft browns and blues to break up the photos and complement her 12x12 grid paper. It’s a classic combo that always feels calm and polished.
In the next example, Jodi pulled her colors straight from the photos! Her red grid paper (Red Tides from the Nantucket Collection) matches the building in the photo almost perfectly. She added ivory, bright blue, and grey mats to coordinate with details like the chalkboard lettering, truck wheels, and surrounding buildings. It all ties together beautifully!
Finally, in this example, Jodi went tropical with bright yellow, pink, and aqua to match her beach-themed paper and photos. The fun colors make everything pop and bring that tropical vibe to life.
These are just a few ideas—but the color possibilities are endless! Try starting with 2–3 colors from your photos or patterned paper and let your creativity take it from there. You’ll be amazed at what you can create with just a little color play!
