We’ve all had that moment—you’re carefully cutting a photo or paper for your layout, and suddenly… oops! It’s crooked, too small, or just didn’t turn out the way you pictured. Kind of like pulling a batch of cookies out of the oven and realizing they spread into one big blob.
But don’t panic! Just like in baking, a little mishap doesn’t mean you toss the whole batch. Cutting mistakes happen to everyone—even experienced scrapbookers—and the good news is: most can be fixed.
Before you throw away your piece (or walk away in frustration!), we’ve got some quick and simple fixes to help you salvage your project and keep your creativity flowing.
Today, we’re sharing a few “kitchen-tested” tricks
for the most common cutting mistakes—like uneven edges, misaligned cuts, or trimming something way too small. Plus, we’ll sprinkle in some expert tips to help you get clean, accurate cuts every time—no baking mitts required!
Let’s turn those oops! moments into “no big
deal” moments.

The Crooked Cut (When the Die Slips!)
"Happy Birthday Sadie" by Paije Potter - Pattern #476
It’s like pulling cookies out of the oven only to realize they don't quite look like the recipe—frustrating, but totally fixable!
What happened? Your die may have shifted in the machine.
Fix it fast: Try using a small piece of
washi tape to gently hold your die in place while cutting. Just make sure it’s not covering anything important—tape that’s too sticky can peel part of your photo.
Baking tip: Always line things up
carefully before you “pop them in the oven”—or in this case, the die machine!
A Sliver of White (The Slightly Off Cut)
"Disneyland Birthday" by Paije Potter - Pattern #1070
This is the scrapbook version of a cracked cookie—still totally edible (or usable!), but not quite how you pictured it.
What happened? Sometimes, a cut can be just a tiny bit off and leave a distracting edge.
Fix it fast:
Use a matching marker or ink pad to gently color the edge of the photo or mat. It blends the line and saves your page from a reprint.
Baking tip: A little frosting—or in this case, ink—can cover a
multitude of imperfections!
Warped Dies or Crunchy Sounds
"Breakfast in Richmond" by Jodi Benson - Pattern #1099
Don’t worry—it’s not your mixer breaking! Just a common quirk that happens with well-loved tools.
What happened? Dies and plates can warp or make “crunching” noises during cutting.
Fix it fast: Rotate your dies or place them at a slight angle as they go through your machine. Also, flip your cutting plates regularly to keep everything even.
Baking tip: Just like rotating your cookie tray halfway through baking helps even things
out, turning your tools keeps them working like a charm!
Every scrapper (and every baker!) makes a few messes along the way. The good news? You’re learning, growing, and getting better with
every page. And we’re right here in your kitchen—er, craft room—cheering you on!
